Mallory Bjella's Story

Mallory Bjella grew up on a farm at Dubuc, SK where she was involved with the raising of cattle and general farming activities. She loved horseback riding, going on many rides with her siblings. She caught on to computers at an early age and became very proficient with them.

Mallory was a very good athlete. She participated in the Esterhazy girls hockey program right from its beginnings in 1997 until she graduated. She loved the sport and was an inspiration to the players; hence, they named her captain for all those years. She obtained her brown belt in Karate and won many medals in competitions. She also played ball and had the opportunity to play with the Southeast Saskatchewan Rural Thunder girls AA fastball team.

Mallory was a very good big sister to her sister and two brothers; she was like a mother to her youngest brother who was 9 years younger. Also, she had a very witty sense of humour, making her a very likeable person.

Mallory Bjella was a very academically minded student throughout high school, winning the Governor General Award and the General Proficiency Award when she graduated in 2001.

Mallory was very hardworking and very capable with her hands. From mechanics to woodworking to computer work, she had a very admirable work ethic. She was very polite, patient, considerate and kind; she was liked by everyone. Mallory developed a very rare autoimmune disease (Neuromyelitis Optica) that ultimately paralyzed her and took her life at the age of 39.

Mallory’s family would like to start a scholarship in her memory for grade 12 students based on: academic achievement, involvement in sports, need and community involvement.
