Cultural Reconnection
2023 Truth and Reconciliation Fund Grant Recipient— $13,075.85
With the support of this grant and one received through Sask Culture we were able to offer over 40 cultural activities that served nearly 500 participant interactions. The funds provided through SSCF Truth and Reconciliation Fund supported the salary costs of the cultural coordinator who planned and implemented the activities.
Transportation and childcare, when offered, proved extremely beneficial for participation. There is a strong interest in community for it.
The one activity that stuck out was the trip to Pasqua First Nation where about 25 kids took part in harvesting wild game. When pulling up the adults were not sure what reaction the kids would have participating in this activity. There were two animal carcasses that were hunted the day before laying on the ground. I would say about 90% of the kids were absolutely excited to learn this process, the other 10% preferred to watch from afar and play amongst each other on the land, hanging out by the fire. It was impressive the hands on support that the kids provided. Many left with meat that was harvested and were able to bring it home to their families. The pride echoed through the conversations about the experience for days to come.
