Growing up in Moose Jaw, I had heard about the Wilson Scholarships for a number of years and believed they held a certain amount of prestige.

In 2013, I was attending the University of Regina to complete a Bachelor of Music with a major in Performance/Composition. I was at the point in my studies where I thought I had a fair chance at receiving one of these scholarships and decided to apply for the Kathleen Wilson Scholarship for instrumentalists.

I found the application process to be quite straight forward, but thorough in its requirements for reference letters, repertoire, and curriculum vitae information. I was delighted to hear that I had received the scholarship, which helped a great deal in facilitating the financial requirements of my degree. More than anything, the scholarship allowed me to focus a greater amount of time and energy on my creative and scholastic endeavors, and develop a more consistent performing schedule.

Once I finish my degree I plan to continue performing regularly and pursuing post secondary studies in composition. I am grateful to the Wilson family and the South Saskatchewan Community Foundation for administering these awards. I highly recommend that anyone considering post-secondary education in the arts apply for these scholarships.

The Larry Scholarship Program had been in place since 2006. After his contribution to the restoration of the Capitol Theatre in Moose Jaw (renamed the Mae Wilson Theatre in honour of his mother), Larry Wilson wanted his five siblings – Dorothy, Gerald, Kathleen, Silvia and Marlene – to be remembered as well. As such, he created a scholarship for each of their names and one in his own. These scholarships are administered by the South Saskatchewan Community Foundation on behalf of the Wilson Family.

The following scholarships are given out each year to students in the arts categories:
