Unity and Wellness: Youth Cultural Symposium
2023 Truth and Reconciliation Fund Grant Recipient— $10,000
Objectives:
- To address reconciliation by improving educational and health outcomes for all children and youth in attendance through building empathy, understanding of, and appreciation for First Nations health and wellness practices, and culture.
- To promote the inherent value of Indigenous culture.
- To have Indigenous students see that their culture is valued and to see themselves as valuable and welcome members of communities.
- To build bridges and partnerships between Nekaneet First Nation and other communities in Southwest Saskatchewan.
The project successfully addressed Calls to Action in Education, Language and Culture, Health, and Newcomers to Canada areas by:
- Featuring indigenous students in roles of leadership, organization, facilitation, and presentation;
- Providing teachings about a wide variety of topics including cultural practices, local indigenous history, Cree language, healing practices, mental health, addictions, and more;
- Providing students who are new to Canada to gain an understanding of Indigenous culture.

That was such a great event. I already have some ideas for things we could do next year.
