Impact Stories: Leaving a Legacy

Victoria Naismith

First Recipient of the Second Lieutenant Andrew Naismith Benevolent Fund Bursary

Second Lieutenant Andrew Naismith left behind his wife and three young children after his tragic and unexpected passing in 2003, when he was struck by a driver who fell asleep at the wheel. Shortly after, a fund was created in his name at SSCF. The fund is designed to provide bursaries to his children. Afterwards, it will assist other children of Canadian Armed Forces members who have faced similar circumstances.

Andrew’s daughter, Victoria Naismith, became the first recipient of the bursary in 2020. This bursary is helping Victoria work towards her dream career.

I felt good. It felt like I had purpose. It was nice to know that there were people that care about my father and want to help others like me.

“I want to be in the military… in the medical field for sure. I’ve always been interested in medicine and healing people. There is a need for it in the military, and it has been my dream for a long time,” says Victoria. Victoria goes on to show appreciation and hope for all future recipients of the bursary. She said “I really hope this helps a lot of people in the future. It would make me very happy to know that it helps others achieve their goals and dreams.”
