MEDIA, COMMUNICATIONS, & ENGAGEMENT STUDENT POSITION

Position Summary:

The Social Media, Communications, & Engagement Student will manage and grow the Foundation’s digital and media presence by creating engaging online content, supporting media outreach, and helping to share stories of community impact. This role provides hands-on experience in communications, public relations, and marketing while contributing to the Foundation’s mission of connecting donors and charities through storytelling. Students in this position will collaborate with Foundation staff to plan and execute social media campaigns, prepare and distribute press materials, and assist in coordinating news segments highlighting the Foundation’s work in the community.

Strategic Alignment of the Position:

This position supports the Foundation’s communications and awareness strategy by amplifying its message across both digital and traditional media platforms. Through compelling storytelling and community outreach, the social media & Communications Student helps increase visibility, foster trust, and enhance engagement with donors, charities, and the public.

Key Responsibilities:

Manage and grow various social media accounts through consistent posting and community engagement.
Plan and implement social media campaigns that promote awareness of the Foundation’s work, events, and impact.
Carry out community campaigns not only online but within the city.
Create high-quality visual and written content, including posts, videos, and graphics, aligned with the Foundation’s brand.
Assist with preparing press releases, media advisories, and communications materials, including coordination with media outlets to book various segments.
Support the development of a communications calendar that integrates social media and media outreach timelines.
Monitor analytics and engagement metrics; prepare reports on campaign performance.
Collaborate with other student teams to promote events, donor stories, and community initiatives.

Qualifications:

Experience managing social media platforms (Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, LinkedIn, etc.).
Strong writing and storytelling skills, with the ability to tailor messages for different audiences and media types.
Experience creating visual content in Canva. Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) is an asset.
Basic understanding of media relations or public communications (e.g., press release writing, outreach coordination).
Excellent verbal communication and organizational skills.
Professional, detail-oriented, and able to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
Interest in nonprofit communications, marketing, or public relations is an asset.

Eligibility:

As this is in collaboration with the Employment and Social Development Canada Summer Student Program, participants must be:

Between 15 – 30 years of age (inclusive) at the start of employment.
A Canadian Citizen, permanent resident, or person on whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.
Legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial/territorial legislation and regulations. Note: International students are not eligible. Recent immigrants are eligible if they are Canadian Citizens or permanent residents.

Job Details:

The positions are approx. 35 hours per week from May – August (approximately 12 – 16 weeks). Extensions of fall and winter work are based on budget limitations and skills of students.
Hours of operation are from 8:30 am – 4:30 pm.
Hourly wage: beginning at $20.00 and increases $1/year up to $24.00, paid bi-weekly.
